Sport | The 63rd edition of the Trofeo Laigueglia kicked off today from Albenga, marking a new chapter in the long tradition of the cycling race. The teams were presented in Piazza del Popolo, which also hosted the Starting Village, and at around 11:30 from Via Enrico d’Aste, near Piazza San Michele, the cyclists set off along the Via Aurelia.

Satisfaction was expressed by the mayor of Albenga, Riccardo Tomatis: “It is a wonderful day for me, for Albenga, for all sports enthusiasts and this, I must say, is thanks to the collaboration with the Municipality of Laigueglia and ExtraGiro because they allowed us to organise the event, to find a way to further enhance this moment which represents one of the most beautiful occasions in Italian and international cycling.” The mayor of Laigueglia, Giorgio Manfredi, also expressed appreciation at the start: “It is truly a pleasure to share this event, which is the most important for us, for a small town like Laigueglia. I must congratulate the administration and Mayor Riccardo Tomatis because it is a beautiful location, very well equipped, and it does not make us miss the start in Laigueglia’s historic centre. Here we have more space and I hope this is the beginning of a new and long collaboration that can bring great benefits to the Trophy and to sport. Thanks to Albenga and thanks to Laigueglia.”

The challenging route of the Trofeo Laigueglia stretches over 192 kilometres with a total elevation gain of approximately 2,900 metres. The competition unfolds along a course that crosses characteristic landscapes of the Ligurian Riviera. Among the new features of this edition are the inclusion of the Cipressa, a climb especially known for the Milan-Sanremo, and a stretch of over twelve kilometres along the Riviera dei Fiori Cycle Path, built on the route of an old railway line. Riders will also face the technical sections of Capo Mele, Capo Cervo, and Capo Berta. The race finishes in Laigueglia, with the finish line located on Corso Badarò.
