In the Cinque Terre, the Nativity scene in Manarola lights up

Presepe Manarola

This year, the event of lighting the traditional Manarola Nativity Scene was once again celebrated in the Cinque Terre National Park. Originally created in 1961 by Mario Andreoli, the tradition has been kept alive by the volunteers of the Manarola Nativity Scene Association following his passing.

At the ceremony, the Assessor for Environment and Land Protection, Giacomo Raul Giampedrone, described the nativity scene as “a masterpiece that symbolizes not only the Cinque Terre but the whole of Liguria during the Christmas season.” He emphasized that this marks the second year the nativity scene, featuring over 200 illuminated figures on a hillside overlooking the sea, is lit without its creator, Mario Andreoli, who is fondly remembered by all. Giampedrone praised Andreoli’s visionary talent and dedication, which turned Manarola into a globally unique destination.

He also expressed gratitude to the Alpine Rescue for their collaboration in adding a new figure to the nativity scene, depicting a rescuer helping a person to stand, symbolizing the daily commitment of the personnel in the area.
