The Municipality of Ceriale has been officially recognised as a “Turtle-Friendly Municipality” following an agreement signed with Legambiente Nazionale Aps – Rete Associativa Ets. This partnership is part of broader efforts aimed at the conservation of the Caretta caretta species and the protection of coastal habitats, within the framework of the Life Turtlenest project, which receives funding from the European Union’s Life programme.

The local administration has committed to adhering to Legambiente’s guidelines for the responsible management of beaches, which are considered potential nesting sites for sea turtles. In acknowledgement of this commitment, the municipality was awarded a flag symbolising its active role in safeguarding these animals.

Key measures include compliance with regulations designed to protect the marine environment and coastlines, such as prohibiting motor vehicles from accessing or parking on the beaches, banning the lighting of fires or bonfires, and preventing littering. These actions are important as they help preserve dune vegetation and prevent disturbances to turtle nesting and hatching. Additionally, manual beach cleaning is encouraged to maintain the integrity of dune habitats and nesting areas.

The agreement also calls for avoiding any excavation or levelling activities that might alter the natural formation of dunes. Furthermore, awareness-raising initiatives are planned for beach facility operators, encouraging them to adopt practices that protect the beaches. This includes appropriate placement of umbrellas and sunbeds, careful management of sports equipment, and reducing artificial lighting visible from the shore at night.

Mayor Marinella Fasano and Deputy Mayor and Environment Councillor Luigi Giordano noted that the recognition “certifies the dedication by the municipal administration towards environmental sustainability” and that Ceriale offers “an ideal habitat for turtle nesting.” They also emphasised that protecting the marine ecosystem is “a commitment for everyone” and acknowledged the local beach operators’ attentiveness to these issues. According to them, the protocol highlights “a strong sensitivity to biodiversity and the enhancement of a true natural spectacle represented by these magnificent turtles.”
