At the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco on Wednesday, 18 December 2024, a notable gathering took place to commemorate 25 years of the Pelagos Agreement. Over 150 attendees participated in the event titled “Pelagos Living Lab: 25 Years of Research and Collaborative Action“, where the scientific projects of the agreement were showcased.
The day featured a technical-scientific workshop highlighting the initial findings of six projects funded by the Pelagos Agreement. These projects focus on creating distribution maps of species and assessing potential risks from threats such as maritime traffic, underwater noise, pollutants, and port activities and fishing.
During the event, two new collaborations were announced. The Pelagos Agreement signed memoranda of understanding with the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and INFO/RAC, aiming to develop decision-making and management tools for the parties involved.
The meeting marked the commencement of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Pelagos Agreement, which will continue throughout 2025. Over the year, the agreement will also play a pivotal role in the 3rd United Nations Conference on Oceans.
Throughout these 25 years, various stakeholders have been dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals in the Pelagos Sanctuary and will persist in their efforts, fostering a sanctuary that serves everyone. The focus is set for 2025, a year when efforts to safeguard the area will continue.
