The region of Liguria has officially been recognized as the “European Region of Sport 2025” during a ceremony at the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels. Representing the region at the event, Sports Assessor Simona Ferro accepted the official flag from Gian Francesco Lupattelli, president of ACES Europe, marking this prestigious accolade.
Marco Bucci, President of the Liguria Region, emphasized the significance of this designation, describing it as “a moment of great pride and responsibility.” He highlighted the crucial role of sports in enhancing quality of life, health, and social cohesion. Bucci also noted that in 2025, Liguria will host sporting events that will not only showcase athletes’ talents but also offer opportunities to boost local tourism and the economy.
Simona Ferro expressed gratitude to ACES Europe for selecting Liguria for this honor. She stated, “We are ready, it is a wonderful and exciting challenge.” Ferro outlined two main focuses for the region: promoting physical activity as a tool for physical and mental well-being and developing sports tourism. Plans include grants for local organizations, projects for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, as well as the renovation of sports infrastructure and hosting national and international events. The aim is to create the best conditions for sports participation for both residents and tourists.
