Genoa and Liguria ushered in the Christmas festivities on December 8th by lighting up the piazza De Ferrari and the Christmas tree near the Ducal Palace. The Children’s Choir of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa performed a medley of Christmas songs, gradually illuminating the buildings until the tree was fully lit.
Marco Bucci, the president of the Liguria Region, emphasized the significance of the holidays for the community and the local economy, wishing everyone “happy holidays, with an eye towards the future and the coming new year.” He expressed a commitment to working towards a fulfilling 2025 for the region.
The Christmas tree, a red fir from the Intelvi Valley, was donated by the municipality of Centro Valle Intelvi, in the province of Como. This tree, nurtured in a reclaimed pasture area by the Lario Intelvese Forestry Consortium, symbolizes the collaboration between regions. Marco Alparone, deputy president of the Lombardy regional council, highlighted the value of the friendship between Lombardy and Liguria, noting the shared emotions during the festive season.
The Regional Tourism Assessor, Luca Lombardi, stated that the lighting of the tree marks the beginning of the winter tourist season in Liguria, promoting not only the art cities but also the inland villages. The Deputy Mayor of Genoa, Pietro Piciocchi, spoke about Christmas traditions, like the tree in Piazza De Ferrari and the lights in the neighbourhoods, which enhance the festive atmosphere.
The lighting in Piazza De Ferrari, provided by Iren, was achieved with an innovative low-consumption system that highlights the beauty of Christmas. The event was attended by several institutional figures, including the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure Edoardo Rixi and the Regional Councillors Simona Ferro and Massimo Nicolò.
Gianluca Bufo, CEO of Iren, expressed the desire to contribute to Genoa’s beauty, stating that “being close to our territories is a fundamental aspect of our actions,” reaffirming the company’s commitment to supporting citizens and businesses.
