The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has recently recognized the Gardens of Villa della Pergola in Alassio as a new Partner Garden, highlighting the botanical significance of this site. This accolade coincides with a notable milestone: 2024 marks 18 years since the villa was saved from potential real estate development.
Art historian Silvia Arnaud Ricci, alongside her husband, embarked on the villa’s rescue, overcoming early criticism. Their aim was to preserve and enhance the historical heritage through respectful restorations. This vision has turned Villa della Pergola into a symbol of resilience, safeguarding an important piece of historical and cultural heritage.
Founded in 1804, the Royal Horticultural Society is one of the most prestigious organizations in the field of botany and horticulture, renowned worldwide for events such as the Chelsea Flower Show. Being selected as a Partner Garden means joining an exclusive group of 231 gardens, with only 27 located outside the United Kingdom.
The Giardini di Villa della Pergola exemplify dedication to the cultural and historical preservation of the Ligurian region. Under the guidance of landscape architect Paolo Pejrone, the gardens have been enriched with valuable botanical collections, including those of wisterias and agapanthus. The park hosts a diverse array of Mediterranean and exotic flora, providing a unique sensory experience through its fragrances and colors.
In 2022, the gardens earned the “Most Beautiful Park in Italy” award, while in 2024 Silvia Arnaud Ricci will be honored with the Orticola-iO Donna award for her efforts in enhancing Italy’s landscape heritage. These accolades have made the gardens a significant tourist attraction, helping to promote the region as a green destination.
To celebrate the RHS recognition, themed guided tours will be held in December and January, featuring, for the first time, access to the museum spaces inside Villa della Pergola. The gardens will remain open to the public until January 2025, with scheduled daily visits.
