Alassio in Blu

Students from Alassio are becoming agents of change through an environmental education project. This initiative is part of the educational path “Alassio in Blu”, focusing on the sea and Ocean Literacy. From December 2nd to 5th, theoretical lessons on these topics are offered in the city’s secondary schools, such as M.M. Ollandini and IS Giancardi Galilei Aicardi.

The project is organized by Marina di Alassio in collaboration with the Circolo Nautico al Mare di Alassio (CNAM), with support from the Municipality and Gesco. At the start of the lessons at the Ollandini Institute, Mayor Marco Melgrati, City Council President Fabio Macheda, Marina di Alassio Director Marino Agnese, and Circolo Nautico President Carlo Canepa, accompanied by Councilor Martino Pogliano, extended their institutional greetings.

The project’s goal is to enhance understanding of the sea, highlighting its connection to human life and well-being. Through classroom lessons, sensory workshops, and beach activities, the aim is to foster in students a sense of belonging to the sea, encouraging respect, protection, and promotion. Marine biologist Monica Previati, who oversees the project, explains: “Protection is one of the prerogatives of enhancement: knowing the marine natural heritage and becoming aware of the risks it faces are actions of great importance, even from the perspective of sustainable tourism.”

Participants become active protagonists of their education, transitioning from learning to communication with various interlocutors. Activities move from classrooms to the port, beach, and squares of Alassio, enabling young people to share ideas and projects with citizens and tourists.

In addition to theoretical aspects, the project includes sensory workshops to discover and recognize marine flora and fauna. Even Christmas will be influenced by the sea, featuring a theatrical performance created by the students, centered on the theme of human care and connection with the sea.

Sabina Poggio, the principal of the State Comprehensive Institute of Alassio, comments, “The Institute is honored to participate in this initiative that involves not only the municipality but also various schools in the area.” The Moglio Primary School, coordinated by Mariangela Santorso, is part of the Green Flag project, which promotes concrete ecological actions.

Rinaldo Agostini, president of Marina di Alassio, emphasizes the significance of the initiative: “Developing Alassio in Blu is an investment in the future. We can’t just manage a port technically; we must also nurture skilled sailors who understand that their actions impact the future of our marine environment.”

The collaboration between the City, Marina di Alassio, and CNAM continues with the aim of bringing youth closer to the sea, as confirmed by Carlo Canepa, president of the Nautical Club: “Our local and universal guarantee of life!”

Alassio remains committed to offering cultural and educational initiatives for the community. Mayor Marco Melgrati states: “The marine environment must be explained and understood in all its aspects so that it becomes a treasure for future generations.” Fabio Macheda, president of the City Council, concludes: “This project reflects the collective commitment of local entities to raise awareness and educate new generations on the invaluable importance of the sea and the protection of biodiversity.”
