On Saturday, December 14th at 4:00 PM, the opening of the 15th edition of Natale Sottovetro will take place in Altare, featuring the exhibition titled “The Animals of Antonio Da Ros: The Magic of Submerged Glass,” organized in collaboration with Il Mondo del Vetro.
The exhibition honors the art of Antonio Da Ros (Venice, 1936-2012), a pivotal figure in Murano design from the ’50s to the ’80s. In 1958, fresh from graduating at the Istituto d’Arte di Venezia, Da Ros became the artistic director at the glassworks Gino Cenedese & C., introducing a renewed artistic and technical vision. He focused on the technique of submerged glass, exploring new chromatic effects through layering crystal and colored glass, crafting unique pieces that border on sculpture. Da Ros’s works reflect the vibrant artistic and cultural atmosphere of Venice, influenced by the abstraction of Peggy Guggenheim, the avant-garde of Carlo Cardazzo, and major exhibitions like the Venice Biennale. In 1958, at the Biennale, Da Ros presented the Contrappunti, submerged glass pieces, earning the first prize in the glass art section. From then on, his works were showcased in various editions of the Biennale, the Milan Triennale, and prestigious international exhibitions.
The exhibition titled “The Animals of Antonio Da Ros: The Magic of Submerged Glass“, hosted in the Sala del Camino di Villa Rosa, showcases the glasswork dedicated to animals, initiated in 1962. His creations, stylized yet meticulously detailed, depict various animal species with smooth, clean lines. These small sculptures, rich in technique and chromatic innovation, perfectly embody Antonio Da Ros’s distinctive style.
The exhibition will be open to the public until February 14, 2025.
