Senior Age: Conscious Use of Digital Technologies and Communication Tools

Convegno Regione Genova

This morning, in the Cristoforo Colombo Hall of the Regional Palace in Genoa, the conference “Third Age: Conscious Use of Digital Technologies and Communication Tools” took place. The event, sponsored by the Communications Regulatory Authority (Agcom), was organized by the Regional Committee for Communications (Co.Re.Com.) of Liguria, with support from TGR Liguria.

The president of CoReCom Liguria, Manfredi Maglio, emphasized the significance of the topic. He stated that it is crucial for citizens to develop skills and knowledge for effective and safe media use, beyond just learning tools, to gain critical thinking abilities. He also highlighted the importance of lifelong learning and media literacy, which incorporates the critical and responsible use of digital technologies for learning, work, and social participation.

Liana Maggiano, a member of CoReCom Liguria, added that the project arises from the demographic reality of Liguria, which has the oldest population in Italy. However, she cautioned that even “digital natives” face risks. Maggiano stressed the importance of prevention in managing these tools with awareness. She mentioned the increase in reports of online fraud in 2023 and the initiative launched by the Bar Association to prevent online crimes.

Mario Staderini, director of Agcom’s Research Service, praised the initiative and stressed that “media and digital literacy fosters critical thinking” and aids in recognizing “fake news” and hate messages.
