Cycling for Change: Amsterdam to Albenga to Support Maternal Shelter

Monica and Sergio cycle from Amsterdam to Albenga to fundraise for a maternal shelter in Kenya, supporting expectant mothers.

Amsterdam

Monica and Sergio began a cycling journey on 14 August, travelling from Amsterdam to Albenga. This route retraces in reverse the path they took a decade ago, when they cycled from Albenga to Amsterdam. The trip is intended to support a charitable cause, specifically the Maternal Shelter project in Maralal, Kenya, which is organised by the association Find The Cure ODV.

The approximately 1,500-kilometre route largely follows the original itinerary, including bike paths along the Rhine River and passing through cities such as Utrecht, Cologne, Strasbourg, and Basel. One of the more challenging sections is the ascent of the Great St Bernard Pass from the Swiss side, reaching an elevation of 2,469 metres. After descending towards Aosta, where they will be welcomed by members of the AVIS association from Gressan, the cyclists will continue towards Ivrea, Asti, and Mondovì, before arriving in Albenga on 28 August. There, friends, supporters, and others are expected to greet them.

Funds raised will be directed towards enhancing the Maternal Shelter, a facility adjacent to the hospital in Maralal that provides accommodation and care for pregnant women who are at risk or live in remote areas. The shelter typically hosts between six and eight expectant mothers each month, offering medical monitoring, maternal and child health classes, hygiene and nutrition education, as well as a safe environment while awaiting childbirth. Planned improvements include furnishing the rooms, upgrading the infirmary and laundry facilities, enhancing the kitchen, and creating a covered space for educational activities.

Those wishing to contribute to the initiative can make donations via bank transfer to the IBAN IT19I0501801400000011233798 or through the dedicated online platform available at you.findthecure.it/Amsterdam-Albenga.

Monica and Sergio have described their journey as more than just a sporting challenge, calling it “a journey of heart and pedals to change the world, one mother at a time.” Updates on their progress can be followed on the Facebook page Albenga Amsterdam.
