Marco Bucci, President of the Liguria Region, explained that “as every year, we kick off the Christmas holiday season with the tree, the lights, and the nativity scene, elements that tell the story of our shared roots and the cultural heritage of the area.” Bucci emphasized the importance of the nativity scene, coming from the 18th-century Genoese school of nativity art, describing it as an “authentic piece of art and history.” He invited the community to join the event at Piazza De Ferrari, considering it a significant moment “for the spirit, for the community, and for our economy.”
Genoa’s Deputy Mayor, Pietro Piciocchi, stated that “these days, Genoa is preparing, as it does every year, for the Christmas holidays with the setup of the traditional tree at Piazza De Ferrari, the lighting of decorations in the districts with the Civ, and nativity scenes that can be visited not only in the city center but also in various neighborhoods.” He expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the arrangements, especially the technicians from Aster and the Local Police for their efforts.
Yesterday, the Christmas tree arrived in Genoa, a red spruce over 17 meters tall from a grazing area in the Alps, donated by the municipality of Centro Valle Intelvi. The tree was transported and placed in Piazza De Ferrari by the staff of Aster Genova.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the assembly of the Regione Liguria Nativity Scene, on display on the ground floor of the regional palace. This composition, dating back to the 18th century and attributed to Pasquale Navone, originates from the Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo in Staglieno. An intriguing detail is the inclusion of a figure wearing denim trousers, indicating the use of this fabric as early as the 1700s.
The Nativity Scene will be unveiled on December 8 at 5 PM, followed by the lighting of the tree and the Piazza De Ferrari lights, crafted by Iren. The innovative lighting system will employ smart lights and intelligent controllers to create effects designed to highlight the beauty of Christmas.
After the Nativity Scene’s inauguration, music will fill the entire square. At 6 PM, the Children’s Choir of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa will perform a medley of Christmas songs, accompanied by the gradual illumination of the buildings, culminating in the lighting of the tree. The music will continue until 7 PM.
