Meteo Liguria, Arpal: warning for the storm surge from the southwest

ancora

ARPAL has issued a weather warning for a storm surge driven by southwesterly winds. In the coming days, atmospheric conditions across Europe are expected to become particularly dynamic. The formation of two low-pressure systems over northeastern Europe, accompanied by a secondary low over the Ligurian Sea, will create a configuration that could trigger the most intense storm surge of 2024 to date, characterized by two phases.

Currently, minimum temperatures are higher than expected, especially along the coast. Light to moderate winds and scattered showers will continue throughout the day.

On Wednesday, a large cold front will reach northern Italy. Initially, Liguria will be shielded by the foehn effect of descending winds. Between tomorrow and Thursday morning, clear skies will be followed by increasing cloudiness and possible light precipitation, particularly in the eastern areas. Snowfall along the coast is unlikely, although some flakes may fall inland in the western regions where cold air pockets exist.

In addition to varying winds from southwest to strong gale and from north to gale in different phases, with gusts potentially reaching 80-90 km/h, the most intense event will be the storm surge, with significant values especially in the east.

The sea will begin to rise from late this evening, maintaining a wave period exceeding 7 seconds throughout Wednesday. The western coasts will initially be the most affected, gradually shifting eastward, particularly in areas exposed to southwesterly winds. The significant wave height could reach 7 meters offshore, with a period of about 9 seconds.

On Thursday, southwesterly winds will increase again, as will the sea, starting late afternoon, with a second intense storm surge expected between Thursday and Friday evening.
