The province of Savona has recently been struck by three flood events, causing estimated damages of around 100 million euros. The impact of the adverse weather was particularly felt between the Albenga area and the Val Bormida, spanning from September 6 to October 27. Regional assessori, members of the executive cabinet (Giunta), for Civil Protection, Giacomo Raul Giampedrone, and for Complex Crisis Areas, Paolo Ripamonti, met with the 51 affected municipalities and the province of Savona to assess the situation.
According to assessore Giampedrone, “our efforts have been continuous to swiftly complete the damage reports, which were sent to the National Civil Protection Department last week.” The completed forms are crucial for obtaining the recognition of the State of Emergency, which was requested by the Region on October 31. Giampedrone announced that he will be in Rome next week to discuss with the Head of the Department, also addressing this issue.
The efforts undertaken have provided a clear picture, both geographically and economically, of the four calamitous events. The initial phase addresses damage to public assets, followed by measures for businesses and private citizens. Giampedrone states, “Up to now, compensation for the most urgent interventions has never been less than 90% of the damage to public assets.” With the recognition of the state of emergency, there is a hope for adequate financial allocation and a national ordinance to dispose of flood waste.
Assessore Ripamonti emphasized the meeting’s significance to gain a clear understanding of the situation and to show the Giunta‘s support for the province of Savona. The Chamber of Commerce estimated the damages at approximately 40 million euros, with most impacts on companies in the Val Bormida. In collaboration with delegated advisor Alessio Piana, efforts are underway to support the damaged SMEs and ensure a swift recovery of productive activities, safeguarding jobs.
